Simple Ways to Care for 14K Gold

A thoughtful routine helps keep your gold jewelry looking its best. Care depends on the whole piece—including any stones, pearls, plating, clasps, and special finishes—so check the product information before cleaning.

Wipe gently after wearing

Use a soft, clean cloth to remove everyday oils and surface residue. Avoid rough materials and abrasive pastes, which can scratch a polished surface. If you are unsure whether a cloth is suitable for a plated or textured finish, ask before using it.

Keep chemicals away

Remove jewelry before swimming, household cleaning, exercise, or activities that may expose it to impact or snagging. Apply perfume, lotion, and hair products before putting on your jewelry, and let those products dry. Chlorine, cleaners, and abrasive chemicals can affect gold alloys and other materials in a piece.

Clean according to the piece

For a plain gold piece without stones, pearls, glued elements, or a special finish, a little mild soap in lukewarm water and a soft cloth may be suitable. Rinse carefully and dry thoroughly. Do not assume this method is right for every item. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or strong chemical dips unless a jeweler confirms they are appropriate for the entire piece.

Store pieces separately

Keep chains untangled and store jewelry in separate soft pouches or compartments so pieces do not rub against each other. Fasten chain clasps before storing them. Choose a dry place and keep delicate chains away from heavier jewelry that could catch or bend them.

Check clasps and connections

Look at clasps, jump rings, pendant bails, and stone settings periodically. If a connection looks open, a clasp does not close properly, or a stone moves, stop wearing the piece and have it checked by a jeweler. Do not pull or force a chain through a pendant opening.
